about start

Steve Mayer studied at Aston University in Birmingham, graduating in 1986 and qualifying in 1987. Between 1986 and 1992 he worked for the Co-op, Dollond & Aitchison and Boots Opticians before spending 5½ years working for Christoffel Blinden Mission in Africa.

For most of his time in Africa, Steve was based in Botswana, a land-locked country bordering South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia. He worked at the Leseding Eye Care Centre in Mochudi and helped run the eye clinics, optical workshops, and outreach clinics and assisted the national low vision programme. He also provided training for clinical assistants to carry out tests for spectacles (refraction) and optical workshop skills (glazing, low vision device manufacture, etc), with students coming from around the southern Africa region. All of this work was aimed at providing eye care for the poorest people. Steve left in 1997, as his staff were able to carry on the work successfully.

In 1994 Steve married Anda, a South African who was also working in Mochudi. Erin, their first child was born in 1997 in Botswana. (Aneke, their second child was born in 2001 in Tameside – not such an exotic location!)

Steve Mayer Opticians Botswana stamp

Steve spent some time overseas a few years ago providing eyecare and working on clinical development in optometry – and this resulted in him appearing on a postage stamp!  The first picture on the stamp below is our very own Mr Mayer!

After a year’s sabattical break, Steve Mayer Opticians opened in May 1999 in Stalybridge. Using much of the experience gained while in Africa, we wanted to be able to provide a quality eye care service at an affordable price. We continue to grow, largely as a result of recommendation from our existing patients – we hope that you will agree that we are worth recommending!

Steve has passed the first stage in the ocular therapeutics qualifications (Additional Supply). This allows him to treat a few more eye conditions in the practice – he already routinely attends to many ‘eye casualty’ problems (red eye, foreign bodies, abrasions, etc).

Steve has been a member of the West Pennine Local Optical Committee (LOC) since 2000, and was chairman for 6 years, stepping down in 2016. He was also a member of the Local Optical Committee Support Unit (LOCSU) Board for 3.5 years, stepping down in 2014.
